Grape Varieties Viosinho

Based on purely Viosinho grapes on schist soils, coming from two parcels at higher altitude around Villa Real, close to the Medronheiro winery, the philosophy of the Meruge Branco is an oak aged white with potential for cellaring and improvement with maturity. Though, winemaker, Paulo Ruão, also wanted to do things a little differently...

The Viosinho grape from these selected vineyards has excellent acidic structure, which is required to take the oak ageing and future cellaring, and so was chosen as a varietal wine rather than the more traditional Douro blend. It is fermented and aged in new Portuguese oak barrels, raw, without toast - an important feature so as not to overdo things! With the structure and complexity displayed, this is a wine made with modern thought and resulting balance. It can be drunk young, but it has enormous potential to be greater, later.
