Ana Sofia and Sara come from different backgrounds within the wine trade. Sara has been export manager for a couple of well-known producers and is also a trained winemaker. Ana Sofia's background is marketing, having worked with Wines of Portugal and now set up her own marketing company.
Having known each other for many years, through meeting at various trade events, these two friends have now embarked on a journey to bring new wines, wine styles, and wine products to the market. Defio means 'challenge', and represents the steep learning curve, and the many 'ups and downs' Sara and Ana have been through in realising their joint dream.
They do not own vineyards, nor a winery, but they know a lot of great people! Their first wine, Baga 'clarete' in a can, has been produced to their specifications, under the watchful eyes of Niepoort's Sergio Silva, at Quinta do Baixo. The winemaking philosophy of Defio fits in perfectly with the Nat'Cool movement, utilising organic grapes, made with minimal intervention, and minimal sulphur additions. The resulting wine being light, easy-going, and delicious.
The pair have active and imaginative minds, always questioning. There will be more, exciting projects to come, very soon!
